RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

We have a rich scientific heritage. Over the past few years, we have transformed Human Genome Sciences from a company focused primarily on discovery to a company focused primarily on commercialization of our promising lead products – including BENLYSTA® (belimumab), which in March 2011 became the first new approved drug for lupus in more than fifty years, and raxibacumab for inhalation anthrax.

HGS also remains committed to scientific innovation and the discovery and development of new medicines to save and improve lives. Right behind our late-stage products is an emerging mid-stage pipeline, focused on immunology and oncology and including potential additional indications for BENLYSTA. We also have substantial financial rights to certain products in the GSK clinical pipeline. GSK is currently conducting Phase 3 clinical trials of darapladib in men and women with chronic coronary heart disease and albiglutide in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

We have the financial strength that allows us to focus on achieving commercial success in the near-term, while also exploring and developing earlier-stage opportunities that will drive long-term growth beyond our lead products.

We have developed core competencies in the discovery and understanding of human genes and their biological functions, and in the discovery and development of novel therapeutic agents.
